Plumbing Renovation: Do It Yourself or Dial a Contractor?

Share

You might think you’re capable or you may very well be capable of a bit of DIY plumbing, but in the eyes of the law it doesn’t matter how skilled you are. Australian laws are very clear and firm on who can do what to your household’s plumbing. Even if you could do it yourself, you’re better off calling for a plumbing contractor in Sydney to do the job to save you a whole lot of trouble.

The laws regarding plumbing work vary from state to state but the general rule of thumb is that if it’s anything beyond replacing a washer, you’re going to need a licensed plumber to do it. In NSW, the laws state that a licence is needed before any plumbing work (including roof plumbing and draining) is done. But why are they so strict about it?

It might seem like the laws are a little too strict, but you have to remember that everything is connected when it comes to plumbing. What you do to the pipes in your home could very easily affect the drinking water system or the sewage system, not just on your block but also those surrounding it. Any evidence of illegal plumbing in your home can also be a big win for insurance companies, as if your home is damaged in any way by the plumbing, they can decide not to pay you a cent. So what are you supposed to do?

Well, it’s obvious, isn’t it? You need to call in a plumber. A licenced plumber, not just that bloke from the pub who did all his home plumbing. But how are you supposed to go about finding a licenced plumber.

One of the best places to start when you’re looking for a good plumber is by asking friends and family. No one has ever gone through life without needing a plumber, and, chances are, you’ll get a list of glowing recommendations, as well as a list of people not to bother with. Once you have a few in mind, it’s time to check that they’re legit. Go online and visit NSW’s Fair Trading website for details as to what a licenced plumber can do, and if you’re interested in checking your plumber’s licence, go to the NSW Government Licensing Service’s website.

You’re better off spending a little extra to get a plumber to do the job for you than risking it all to go DIY.
